How To Search
We recommend you start your search by selecting the 'Payload' and 'Body Style' you need.
Choose the payload and then the type of van (e.g. panel, Luton, tipper, etc). You can then narrow the results further by length, height, manufacturer, model range, fuel type or gearbox.
Why Is Payload Important?
Payload is important because it affects how much weight the van can legally and safely carry. Tools, materials, passengers, racking, conversions and equipment can all reduce the remaining usable payload.
You don't need to make every selection to start a search. When you are ready, click the 'Search' button to use the selections you have already included.
How The 'Payload' Search Works
The payload selector groups vans into payload bands, from 500kg or less through to vans with payloads over 3,500kg where these are available in the data.
Payload should be checked alongside gross vehicle weight, kerb weight, load volume and body dimensions. A larger van may provide more space, but it does not automatically mean that it can legally carry more weight.
Payload, Gross Vehicle Weight and Electric Vans
Payload is the maximum weight a van can legally carry, including tools, equipment, goods, passengers and any other load.
The payload figure is calculated by subtracting the van's kerb weight from its Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
Electric vans generally weigh more than equivalent diesel vans because of the additional weight of the battery pack. As a result, some electric vans may offer a lower payload than a similarly sized diesel model.
Electric vans generally weigh more than equivalent diesel vans because of the additional weight of the battery pack. As a result, some electric vans may offer a lower payload than a similarly sized diesel model.
To help support the transition to electric vehicles, some alternatively fuelled vans are permitted to operate at a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of up to 4.25 tonnes. This additional allowance helps offset the extra weight of the battery pack so that operators can carry payloads that are more comparable to equivalent diesel vans.
If payload is important to your business, always check the manufacturer's published payload and Gross Vehicle Weight figures before ordering a vehicle.
'Body Style' Search
You can narrow the search by body style, including panel vans, pickups, chassis cabs, crew vans, dropsides, Lutons, tippers and minibuses where these are identified in the vehicle data.
Body style matters because payload can vary significantly between different van types, even where the vehicles appear similar in size.
'Length/Height' Search
Length and height can help narrow payload results to vans with the physical size and load area you need.
- Standard/Short Wheelbase (SWB-L1)
- Medium Wheelbase (MWB-L2)
- Long Wheelbase (LWB-L3)
- Extra-Long Wheelbase (L4), sometimes called 'Jumbo'
- Standard Roof (H1)
- Medium Roof (H2)
- High Roof (H3)
- Extra-High Roof (H4)
'Manufacturer' Search
If you want to restrict the search results to one brand of van, select the brand from the 'Manufacturer' list.
Once a manufacturer has been selected, you can also restrict the results to a specific model range where available.
'Fuel/Gearbox' Search
If you want to restrict the search results by fuel type, select the required fuel.
If you select 'Electric' as the fuel type, please note that the gearbox type will normally be 'Automatic' irrespective of any selections in the 'Gearbox' list.
Search Results
Once the search results appear, you can display additional details such as body dimensions, payload, economy, emissions, performance, maintenance and battery information where these are available.
To compare actual payload, open the 'PAYLOAD' section and select 'Max. Payload Weight'. This displays the payload in kilograms where the data is available.
You can also display kerb weight, gross weight, load length, load width, load height, load volume and towing weight where these fields are available.
To see additional items, click on the buttons for 'BODY', 'DIMENSIONS', 'PAYLOAD', 'ECONOMY', 'EMISSIONS', 'PERFORMANCE', 'MAINTENANCE' or 'BATTERY' and check the boxes for the items you want to display on screen.
The most effective way of searching is to set your van requirements first and then click the 'Search' button, but you can also see the impact of changing individual search criteria if instant search updates are enabled.
