What Does Our Car Running Costs Calculator Show?

Our calculator shows the main costs of running a car in the UK, including vehicle price, depreciation, maintenance, fuel costs and pence per mile (PPM).

You can also edit key running cost assumptions to make the figures more realistic for your own driving and ownership costs.

If you want to compare up to 10 cars side-by-side, use our car running costs comparator.

Getting Started

Choose how long you expect to keep the car, select your annual mileage, then choose the manufacturer, model and derivative.

Once your car is selected, we will show forecast depreciation, running costs and pence per mile. You can then use the Edit Details section to tailor the figures.

You can also use the calculator for used car running costs by selecting a similar vehicle and editing the assumptions to match your own car.

How Car Running Costs Are Calculated

Getting Started

To view car running costs just:

  1. Choose how long you expect to keep the car
  2. Select your typical annual mileage
  3. Choose the manufacturer, then model range and derivative you want to see

We'll then display the car's price, forecast depreciation, servicing and maintenance costs, fuel costs and pence-per-mile figures.

To clear your vehicle selection, click the 'Reset' button.

Prices

We'll display the manufacturer's published:

  • List Price*
  • Delivery Charges (if any)
  • The initial tax disc ('vehicle excise duty') for the car
  • The statutory first registration fee
  • The total 'On-The-Road-Price' of the car
  • The second year tax disc ('vehicle excise duty')
  • The fuel type of the car

*Please note that the List Price shown may be different to the P11D value shown on the Company Car Benefit section. This is because the P11D value does not include the electric car grant.

Depreciation

We'll display the forecast depreciation cost of the car from the manufacturer's List Price over the period you expect to keep it and your expected mileage, including:

  • List Price
  • Forecast residual value or 'resale' price of the car
  • Forecast depreciation cost from List Price over the term/total mileage
  • The residual value's percentage of the List Price after your term and total mileage

Running Costs

We'll display the forecast costs of running the car over your selected term/total mileage.

These are often known as 'SMR' (or 'servicing, maintenance and repair') costs and include:

Changing the Costs

You can change some of the running costs to reflect the costs you actually incur, and you can also edit the figures for used cars.

For used cars, select the nearest equivalent car in our database and make sure you choose the correct fuel type. You can then edit the running costs to reflect your own vehicle and ownership costs.

Once the forecast running costs have appeared for depreciation, servicing, maintenance and fuel, scroll down to the 'Your Running Costs' section (or click on the 'Your Running Costs' button).

You will see the 'Edit Details' box. This box allows you to change:

  • The purchase price of the car.
  • The fuel cost for the car.

This includes fuel costs for petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars, but only for the primary fuel cost.

For example, the cost of fuel for a hybrid vehicle can be changed for the price of petrol or diesel, but not for the cost of electricity.

Simply enter the new amount in the appropriate Edit Details box and the depreciation or fuel costs will be recalculated automatically.

Please ensure you type numeric values into the boxes - non-numeric values won't be accepted.

For fuel costs, these will be tailored to the type of fuel for the car.

For electric cars, you can change the electricity cost you pay (in pence per kilowatt hour) and the range of the car.

For cars with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids, you can change the fuel price per litre and the fuel consumption (miles per gallon or MPG).
